Many existing historical records say that the beginning of Gyeyang-gu can be traced back to the Goguryo era, but according to historical progress around the Hang River, it is supported that its history started much earlier than that.
Dolmens in Hakik-dong, Incheon, and remains of the Stone Age such as stone axes and stone blades unearthed in Manseok-dong, Jakyak Island and Gyeongseo-dong are evidence that people might have lived on this flat area around Gyeyangsan
The history of Gyeyang began to be recorded as the Goguryeo in Jubuto-gun in 470.

In 1413 (the 13th year of King Taejong of the Chosun dynasty), it was renamed to Bupyeong-dohobu and after that it was changed to Bupyeong-hyun and then to Bupyeong-gun. In 1914, Bupyeong-gun was incorporated into Bunae-myeon, Bucheon-gun and later into Incheon-bu in 1940.
As Law No.32 states -『Local Autonomous Law』became effective on August 15th, 1949, and Incheon-bu was renamed to Incheon City and Buk-gu was formed as the ‘Gu’ system was implemented according to Law No. 1919 -『Law for installation of a Gu』on January 1st, 1968. After Incheon was raised to the status of Incheon City under the direct control of the government on July 1st, 1981, Gyeyang-myeon, Gimpo-gun was incorporated into Gyeyang-dong Bu-gu, Incheon City under the direct control of the government on January 1st, 1989. Since then, a dong has been divided into smaller dongs as its population grows.

Since it was retitled to Bupyeongdohobu in 1413(13th year of King Taejong, Joseon Dynasty), it was changed to Bupyeonghyeon, and then Bupyeonggun. In 1914, Bupyeonggun was disused, included in Bunaemyeon, Bucheongun, and then included in Incheonbu in 1940. According to the enforcement of Law No 32『The Local Autonomy Law』 on Aug.15, 1949, Incheonbu was retitled to Incheonshi. Then, based on Law No 1919 『The Law of Establishment of Gu』on Jan.1, 1968, Bukgu, Incheonshi was established according to the operation of the Gu system. Since it was raised to Incheonjikhalshi on July 1, 1981, Gyeyangmyeon, Gimpogun was included in Gyeyang-dong, Buk-gu, Incheonjikhalshi on Jan.1, 1989. Then, dong separation has been continued due to sharp increase in population.

On January 1st, 1990, Hyseong-dong and Gyeosan-dong were divided into Hyseong 1and 2-dong, and Gyeosan 1and 2-dong. On May 1st of the same year, Jakjeon-dong was divided into Jakjeon 1 and 2-dong.
